“My gosh, Devon, this is absolutely spectacular.” Elz sighed. “Sedwic was a genius.”

The orchestra played softly in the background as Elz and I turned from our secluded tree in the moonlight and peered at the rear of the brightly lit castle.

Finely made wooden shepherd’s crooks hung with lanterns lined the flagstone walkways and terraces adjacent to the castle, as well as the long, narrow walking bridge that crossed the rear moat.

The lanterns continued their glowing exhibition along a connecting path that wound its way to the woods and then onto the festive meadow below.

The main drive and drawbridge and the many gardens in front of the castle were also lit in the same fashion.

No matter where one might be, they were encircled by a magical ambiance…unless they veered off behind a remote tree seeking privacy.

I studied my wife’s lovely expression, and still couldn’t believe she was with me at my Wedlove. I replied to her comment that Sedwic was a genius. “A genius in love. For it was love that inspired all of this, cara.” I leaned in, pinning her against the hidden tree at which we stood. “And it is love that inspires this.” I nibbled at her lips and worked my way down, mapping a trail along her neck. My fingers slipped into her décolletage and over one breast, tracing a circle over her nipple. I always enjoyed her body’s reaction to that.

Her arms slid around my neck, prompting me to embrace her.

“Are you sure we can’t be seen here, amante? Will we even have enough time to get redressed if we hear someone coming?”

I smiled against her neck and then kissed her shoulder, smoothing my hands down her sides and hips. “We can’t be seen unless someone is sneaking around in the woods, which I highly doubt they are. And I don’t plan on removing any of your clothing, darling, especially if you took me seriously when I told you to dress in a pair of your skimpier underwear rather than those gangly bloomers.” I pinned her with a chastising expression.

Giving her no time to respond, I squatted before her, bracing a knee on the ground, and removed my gloves. I raised the skirts of her Regency ball gown and peered up at her in a happy grin. “I see you did take me seriously.”

Offering her the mass of material now folded in my hands, I taunted her. “Would you mind holding these for me? They’re a bit cumbersome.”

“Devon?” She laughed, taking the skirts. “Surely you’re not thinking—”

“Surely I am thinking, and have been all evening—ever since I first saw you enter the hall at feast.” I took her slippered foot in my hand and propped it onto the bent knee I had resting on the ground. Pushing her leg outward I positioned her just so, and nearly howled as the most predatory thoughts washed over me.

What in the hell? It must be having Elz home with me and being here in this wooded setting that’s making me feel so animal-like.
